I love the way natural light harmonizes common things so beautifully, especially in the late afternoon sun!
I composed these simple shells (that I had brought with me to the beach) together with the dead old weathered driftwood and living plant that was growing in the sand. After taking some color notes and painting a watercolor close up of part of the scene, I painted this canvas in the studio, using that day's photos as reference.
I usually don't go for rendering this much detail in a painting, but this subject was so compelling to me, I couldn't resist the challenge of capturing the various textures and subtle colors being revealed in the sunlight.
